I started watching anime only in 2011-2012, introduced to Naruto. I never really knew any anime besides Naruto, Dragon Ball, One Piece and Bleach, even though I only watched Naruto.<br/><br/>Then I watched Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, in 2013, yes, only one year ago.<br/><br/>I had to say that it was nice at the beginning, with some of the usual badassery, but I started noticing those more 'intelligent' remarks of this anime, the dark story behind the two brothers and their gritty link to Alchemy.<br/><br/>The songs were also good, some much better than the others (Golden Time Lover, Rain) but the five are really amazing.<br/><br/>The story is, overall, very well made, but I think the ending was notgoodthe rest of the series.<br/><br/>Even then, this is definitely an anime I'll rewatch, again and again.
The original Fullmetal Alchemist made back in 2003 was what first introduced me to anime (aside from Pokemona kid of course). Despite its shambled, messy ending, the original series remained one of my favorite animes and I really didn't think much could surpass it until I came across Brotherhood.<br/><br/>Unlike the original FMA anime, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood follows the manga of the series almost exactly from beginning to end. On top of this, Brotherhood manages to improve the flaws of the original anime while still keeping the majority of its strengths.<br/><br/>Emotionally driven, focused, and well structured, Brotherhood is one of the most plot-driven shounen animes out there, to the point where I even hesitate to call it a traditional shounen anime. Its plot is strong enough to keep you interested and, while it does develop throughout the anime, it ultimately never strays from its original point, which is the goal of brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric to recover their original bodies. It has its fun moments, its exciting "on the edge of your seat" moments, and its heart-wrenching moments, and the anime manages to encompass all of these plot factors flawlessly.<br/><br/>Along with the well developed plot, one of the strongest points of FMA Brotherhood is its character development. It's rare for an anime to execute character developmentwellFMA does. The two main characters, Edward and Alphonse, grow tremendously throughout the series. You really feel like you know thempeople by the end of it. But it's not just them, the deurtagonists, villains, anti-heroes, and even minor characters show character development throughout the series in a way that makes you care about each and every one of them.<br/><br/>Edwardthe main protagonist manages to break away from the traditional shounen trend of an idiotic, goofy, but kind hearted main character. He is smart with high morals, but is ultimately quite stubborn and arrogant, and unlike in most shounen, Edward never becomes the most powerful character in the series. In contrast, there's his brother Alphonse Elric, who has a softer, more humble personalitywellthe idealistic, career driven, and often serious Colonel Roy Mustang and many others. The show has an abundance of characters, all with unique personalities, including seven villainous homunculi whose personalities embody each of the seven deadly sins.<br/><br/>The combat is one of the areas where Brotherhood really improved from the original series. As a chemist by profession, I find the concept of alchemy in these two series especially interesting. It utilizes accurate science for the most part while adding a magical flare to it. The combat is fast paced, and the different methods of combat from alchemists and non-alchemists alike makes it interesting without being gimmicky. There's no random power ups or plot armor for the main characters. The protagonists struggle in combat, and don't always win. Character death isn't especially common in this series, but it does happen, often when you don't expect it.<br/><br/>The series also balances out its more serious moments with a bit of humor in between. The show is ultimately more serious toned, but it definitely has its more light hearted moments. However, the humor is also where the show loses the most points for me. While some of the humor is funny, the show also has a bit of gag humor that is often improperly timed with the more serious moments of the show. Edward reacting violently towards being called short is a running gag throughout the show that gets old very quickly, and occasionally, this humor will get meshed within the serious moments of the show which tends to ruin the tone of the scene. However, in the wide scheme of things, this is a minor flaw that doesn't detract much from the overall quality of the series.<br/><br/>Another possible flaw within Brotherhood is how fast paced the first 13 or so episodes are. The first 13 episodes are similar to the first half of the original 2003 anime. Brotherhood seems to assume that most viewers have seen the original anime and move through these plot points fairly quickly. As someone who had already seen the 2003 anime twice before watching Brotherhood, I wasn't bothered by this. But I can see how those who watched Brotherhood first might view the first few episodesbeing too fast paced.<br/><br/>The soundtrack in Brotherhood is justgoodthe original FMA, and remains to be one of the best soundtracks in anime. Each scene has a soundtrack that matches the mood perfectly, whether it be an emotional, heartwenching scene or a fast paced action scene. The animation is smooth, and has improved greatly from the original anime in 2003.<br/><br/>Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is an anime that has it all, it has action, humor, good characters, a strong plot from beginning to end, tear-jerking moments, and even a touch of romance, and it pulls it off almost flawlessly. In comparison to the original Fullmetal Alchemist, Brotherhood is far more lighthearted. The original anime does get quite dark is it progresses, and tends to be a bit more emotional. However, Brotherhood managed to pull off a far more satisfying ending than the original anime. I would recommend watching both Brotherhood and the 2003 anime (2003 one first) if you have the time, but if you have to choose just one, watch Brotherhood.

No, this has no relation with the movie or the previous tv series at all. This series follows more closely to the original manga than it's predecessor, though there are still some cuts from the original source material throughout the series. Several characters from the original manga that were left out of the previous series are used for this series, justhow there are numerous characters from the previous series that are exclusive to that series and are not used here (along with a few minor manga characters that were used in the first series but not here). Also while episodes 2-14 use similar material to the previous series, there are notably a few plot changesit reflects based on what occurred in the manga and not the previous series. Episode 15 would officially start with the material from the manga that was never used before.
